Frequently Asked Questions
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
Pain is really relative. Everyone has a different tolerance to pain. Yes tattoos can hurt! It can be compared to a “hot scratching sensation”. Remember though that you will have a piece of art that will be yours forever and this outweighs the small amount of discomfort you will endure getting your tattoo.
Can I use numbing cream?
We have our own numbing cream in the studio. It has been made especially for numbing the skin for tattooing. There are a few things you need to know before using the cream.
- Our cream needs to be applied to the skin and left to soak in for at least 45mins to 1 hour prior to tattooing.
- It can last up to 2 hours of tattooing. Although everyone is different and this time could vary on individual.
- After the numbing cream wears off the feeling of tattoo process can feel heightened due to the numbness wearing off. Some people find it intense and need to stop.
- For small tattoos we do not suggest using the numbing cream as they do not take long to tattoo and the pain is bearable without the need for numbing cream.
Please feel free to talk to your artist about our numbing cream and they will be more then happy to answer any questions you may have.
What should I get and where?
This you need to think about! We are here to help you turn YOUR ideas into a reality. But we need you to know a starting point! Whats cool to you could be completely different to what we think is cool.
You can choose a picture off google or Pinterest, or you can have our artists create a custom piece just for you. We love to give our clients a original tattoo and we can work with you to create this for you.
Your only limit is your own imagination. As far as where you should get it goes, just keep in mind what you do for work and the type of social circles you are in. You might want to consider placing your tattoo where it can be easily covered up with normal clothing.
Do you do cover ups?
Look, we all make mistakes. Maybe you just changed your mind or moved on. The answer is yes, we can help you design the perfect cover up tattoo so you’ll forget you ever had that old tattoo in the first place.
How do I care for my tattoo?
Leave the tattoo wrapped for a hour or until you arrive home. A fresh tattoo is a open wound and is prone to bacteria and infection. Please do not soak in a bath for up to 2 weeks. Showering is fine. Cleaning the tattoo with warm water and soap is a must. Only use your clean hands to do so, do no use a face cloth or anything abrasive to clean the area. Pat dry with a clean towel and let it dry completely.
Follow with an aftercare product. We suggest our very own aftercare. It is all natural and easy to apply. Made from Unrefined Coconut Oil, Shea Butter and essential Oils. It is made here onsite at the studio with no hidden nasty Petroleum jelly or chemicals. And the healing time is 4 to 5 days using our product.
Check out our full guide to tattoo aftercare here.
How much does it cost to get a tattoo?
When it comes to tattoos, you get what you pay for. Yes, there are plenty of people tattooing out there that will ink you cheap, and you’ll be crying for a real artist to have it covered up. Look for quality, and be willing to pay for it.
NEVER haggle over the price of a tattoo. It is disrespectful to the artist. If you can’t pay for quality, don’t bother. This is not a bargain bin. It is a piece of art you will wear for life.
When is the best time of year to get a tattoo?
Although you can get a tattoo any time of the year, your skin gets a lot more abuse during the summer with swimming, tanning and just being exposed to the elements more. Winter time is really the best season to get a tattoo.
Do you accept walk-ins?

Yesterday I walked in for my first tattoo. The atmosphere was great and the staff were very welcoming and made me feel incredibly comfortable. I had the pleasure of Rochelle being the artist to give me my first tattoo. She was so professional and bubbly and just made me feel relaxed and that I had nothing to be nervous about. I will definitely be returning to this parlour for my future tattoos. I cannot thank you all enough! 🙂
Amazing studio. Such a beautiful parlour (the coolest I've ever visited) and lovely staff. Skye did an awesome job of my mandala. Already planning my next visit! Thanks guys! 🙂 xx
I can’t express how wonderful the experience was! The shop is beautiful and welcoming and the team are all lovely! Rochelle was wonderful enough to give me three beauties! She spent lots of time working out fonts and designs and showing me different options she’d sketched up and helped me figure out perfect placement. This was by far my best tattooing experience (and the others were all brilliant so that’s really saying something). I’ll be returning for many more! Thanks Rochelle!!!! It’s also a really relaxing atmosphere - I could have stayed all day!
Five stars just isn't enough for the awesome work these people do day in and day out. Such a joy walking in and even more walking out with one of their master pieces. Thanks heaps for your expertise with your tattoo guns.
Jane is the best artist I have come across. Her work is amazing, I got exactly what I wanted and can't wait to come back for more. The studio is comfortable and inviting which is a big plus.
Thank you The Art Of Tattoo for making me feel welcomed and comfortable as soon as I walked through the door. I loved the decor of the studio and the calm, chilled out atmosphere. I Got tattooed by Roki, and got an amazing Ta moko done, I'm really happy with the piece and can't wait to go back for more????????????
A 5-star rating doesn't seem high enough for my great experience at the Art of Tattoo at Petersham. Paul was my tattoo artist and did an amazing job both designing and drawing on my tattoo. I've had two very large pieces done by Paul and I've gotten so many compliments on the detail and overall appearance of both. If I get any more tattoos, I'll definitely be going back to Paul! I highly recommend him as a tattoo artist and the Art of Tattoo for all your tattoo needs. So great!!
